Bard and Broadmoor’s partnership began in January of 2006. Since then, over four hundred Bard students have traveled to New Orleans. Past projects range from rehabilitating homes and an elementary school, assisting with case management, helping create a GIS map of the neighborhood, allowing community organizations to both better understand their own needs and apply for outside funding, and more. Bard's Urban Studies in New Orleans summer program, now in its second year, pairs rigorous coursework in urban geography, ecology, and public policy with intensive internships in a range of neighborhood-based recovery organizations. The BIA and BDC are two of the community organizations students can choose to serve in during the summer program.
This year’s program runs from May 29th- July 31st, 2009. Primary consideration is given to applicants who apply before February 10th . For more information and to apply, visit www.bard.edu/neworleans/study/.
Additionally, Bard students continue to travel to New Orleans every winter and summer intercession through the New Orleans Project, working as interns in the BDC and working as teachers’ aides in Andrew H. Wilson School, the neighborhood school. Bard students, especially those who have made previous trips to Broadmoor, are encouraged to apply for the internships and fellowships.
