"I love living in Broadmoor.  The people here are incredibly dedicated to the neighborhood, and I love working with my neighbors to help the community achieve its recovery goals.  It's great to be in a place that's easy to call home, thanks to the friendliness of the people here.  The work I've done at Broadmoor has taught me a great deal about community development, and I've felt that my projects are meaningful and important to the neighborhood."

"When I arrived in Broadmoor I had never eaten a crawfish, never seen a palmetto bug, never gutted a house, never been covered in sweat before I left the front porch, never been in a place for a week and had 100 people know me by name, never shouted “mornin” from my bike a dozen times on my way to work, never heard a coroner play the coronet, never seen more than one parade in a day, never been to a block party with a jazz band on an abandoned porch and 60 adults dancing the Cuban Shuffle... After just three months in Broadmoor, I had done all of that! But, that’s just the 'lagniappe'…

As a graduate student in urban planning, my summer in Broadmoor was also an invaluable education in community-based redevelopment. I met more extraordinary people than I can count, from experts in disaster recovery to “ordinary” citizens who had seen and done extraordinary things in the process of bringing back the place they call home. My Broadmoor experience also helped me land a job after graduate school with a national urban planning consulting firm that is working on the Master Plan for New Orleans. Most importantly, though, I was able to play a meaningful role in the remarkable story of Broadmoor’s recovery, an opportunity for which I am forever grateful."

"Volunteering as an attorney down in Broadmoor has been one of the ultimate highlights of my legal career. I have never worked with a community of people who are so committed to rebuilding their lives and their neighborhood despite tremendous odds. Their dedication and tireless spirit continue to inspire me. I even keep a sticker on my desk in Washington, D.C. that reads "Be a New Orleanian. Wherever you are." Although I only spent several months in Broadmoor I will always consider it a second home."

"I've been living and working in Broadmoor for 4 months now, and it keeps getting better. The first day when my neighbor greeted me with a huge smile and a hug I immediately felt positive about being here. I love the added emotional dimension of living in the place that I am working to improve - it makes what I'm doing here more tangible."

"Living in the neighborhood we're working to revive, and knowing that our own neighbors are benefiting directly from our work, makes for a pretty special experience.  It's also wonderful that the neighborhood's leadership is as attuned to our own goals and interests as they are to the community's needs.  Hal and LaToya know that they'll get the best, most innovative work out of interns and fellows when we're working on projects that we find compelling and interesting, and they work with us to craft projects that will not only benefit the community, but also keep us engaged and help us to learn."
