The Broadmoor Neighborhood's Story

Broadmoor is a neighborhood in New Orleans that flooded after Hurricane Katrina. Four months after the storm, the Bring New Orleans Back Commission recommended that the neighborhood be turned into a drainage park.  Determined to save their community, Broadmoor residents created a recovery plan that outlined a vision for their neighborhood's revitalization.  They have since been working to carry out the plan.

As of January 2010, 85.5% of the neighborhood's houses are occupied or under active repair, and Broadmoor is known as one of the most organized neighborhoods in New Orleans.

Since March of 2006, university students from Bard, Harvard, Notre Dame, Yale, Portland State, West Chester, Butler, and Simon's Rock have worked alongside Broadmoor residents to assist in recovery efforts. They've helped with just about every aspect of recovery -- from gutting houses to administering repopulation surveys to writing grants -- and if you'd like to work in Broadmoor, this website is for you!
